Bamboo is the infrastructure of the hills: baskets, drying racks, fences, roofs, cooking steamers. A village that works bamboo well can earn most of a year's cash from a few months of making things.
The day is spent in a family workshop rather than a demonstration room, so you will be handed a knife and a piece of bamboo and asked to do something with it.
Nobody expects competence. What is expected is that you try, and that you understand how much skill the material demands.
