Lamphun was a separate kingdom for several centuries before it was absorbed, and the old city still has walls, a square grid of streets and a very different pace from the town outside.
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai holds the city's most revered Buddha image and is dressed in gold mosaic twice a year. The dressing is done by people from the surrounding streets and is worth seeing if you can time a visit to it.
The day is walked. The distances are short, the heat is not, and the temple market is best eaten at rather than photographed from a distance.
